Spelling
In second grade at Cascade View Elementary, we use the Building Spelling Skills program. It combines a study of writing sight words, high frequency, and word family words.
Students will take a pre-test for the next week of second grade words on Fridays (pink paper). There are ten words per list taken from the 2nd Grade Harcourt story we are reading that week. If the student gets 100%, the student will be given a list of 3rd grade words (white paper) to focus on for the week.
The students will have the opportunity to practice their spelling words during Daily 5 each day. On Fridays, the class will take a dictation test of 4 sentences. The first 2 sentences will include spelling words from the 2nd grade list. The last 2 sentences will include words from the 3rd grade list. Your child will be graded on all 4 sentences.
These dictation sentences will be used towards 3 grades on the report cards: grammar, spelling, and handwriting.
